taken far too long... only A5 paper, cant believe I did that border, took as long as the rest of the image at least well, this is the back for the pretty pack of tarot cards in my head, was going to be the fool card, number 0, but too many elements of it arent right.
The fool's character is supposed to be the Fool from Robin Hobbs fantasy books, my favourite book character. Hes just so cool, but his story is so sad. The border is based on the border from the back of the book cover of the book Fools Fate. The rose was copied from a stock photo.
This has tons of symbolism in it...the fool card in a tarot pack is number 0, first and last, a loop etc. Its debatably the most powerful and significant card. It's everything and nothing, and the contrast of black and white. The white rose has tons of meanings; white is innocence and pure intention; a white rose is love in a non-sexual way, which is very relevent if you've read the Tawny man series; white is also clarity of thought and purpose; and of course, he is the White Prophet.
The four symbols in the corners are chalices, wands, swords and pentograms - basically the four packs, though they all have their own meanings.
The webs (which took forever) are for the political intrigue which runs through all of Robin Hobb's books.
The fool wears a glove because he has a magic-touched hand, if he touches anyone then they become merged in mind.
Black and white together represent masculinity and femininity combined, and in the books its never said if the Fool is male or female. Black in the background is the unknown, danger and uncontrolled, my poor little Fool is in the middle of it
If you didnt bother to read all that then never mind most of it you can work out yourself (i hope), its just I spent ages trying to fit all the symbolism in, and trying to match the tarot and the Fools character. And I dont believe in tarot by the way, I just love the idea
If you've read the books (and you should you should!!!) then you will love the fool and want to hug him, trust me his character is so wonderful but his story is really sad
no point giving critique on the drawing really, because its been fixed and cant be changed *shrug* but dont let that stop you
the fools character is (c) robbin hobb
[edit] sorry for already too long description, but I gotta add that this is my favourite image iv done to date, and the longest time I've ever spent on any piece of art - hope it shows!
Absoloutely beautiful shading on that! The look in his eye is just so capturing. I could stare at this for ages and still find things I've missed before. I love how it has lots of symbolism. I can tell you put a lot of time into that, it was well worth it! (I'm such a fav whore on your work!)
